Aqueducts: The Solution to Rome's Water Problems

With the development of the first raised aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, folks who lived on the city’s foothills no longer had to depend exclusively on naturally-occurring spring water for their needs. During this time period, there were only 2 other systems capable of providing water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. To provide water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they implemented the new tactic of redirecting the movement from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel.Aqueducts: Solution Rome's Water Problems 4665394058261.jpg Through its initial construction, pozzi (or manholes) were placed at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were manufactured to make it less difficult to manage the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to extract water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. The cistern he had made to gather rainwater wasn’t adequate to meet his water needs. Via an orifice to the aqueduct that ran under his property, he was able to suit his water wants.

A Chronicle of Wall Fountains

The translation of hundreds of classic Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the heart of his objectives. At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. The ancient Roman custom of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V.Chronicle Wall Fountains 0298631824798035687.jpg At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
