Rome’s First Water Transport Solutions

Rome’s first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, residents residing at higher elevations had to depend on natural springs for their water.Rome’s First Water Transport Solutions 372268386803.jpg If residents living at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to rely on the other existing solutions of the day, cisterns that accumulated rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that drew the water from under ground. To supply water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they applied the new method of redirecting the flow from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. The aqueduct’s channel was made available by pozzi, or manholes, that were added along its length when it was first engineered. Although they were originally developed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, starting when he acquired the property in 1543. It seems that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to meet his needs. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat under his residence, and he had a shaft opened to give him access.

Often serving as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and highly educated scholars all in one, from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century, fountain designers were multi-talented people, Leonardo da Vinci, a Renaissance artist, was renowned as an ingenious intellect, inventor and scientific virtuoso. The forces of nature inspired him to explore the properties and movement of water, and due to his fascination, he carefully recorded his ideas in his now celebrated notebooks. Modifying private villa settings into imaginative water showcases full with symbolic meaning and natural beauty, early Italian water feature designers fused creativity with hydraulic and gardening ability. The brilliance in Tivoli were developed by the humanist Pirro Ligorio, who was widely known for his capabilities in archeology, engineering and garden design. Well versed in humanist subject areas and ancient scientific readings, some other water fountain designers were masterminding the excellent water marbles, water attributes and water pranks for the various lands near Florence.

Back Story of Garden Water Fountains

The translation of hundreds of ancient Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 till 1455. It was imperative for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was reconditioned starting in 1453. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. Adjustments and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
