Rome’s First Water Transport Systems

Rome’s very first raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, inhabitants residing at higher elevations had to rely on natural springs for their water.Rome’s First Water Transport Systems 661470385.jpg If residents residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to rely on the other existing solutions of the time, cisterns that gathered rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from under ground. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill through the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. Pozzi, or manholes, were constructed at regular stretches along the aqueduct’s channel. Although they were primarily designed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to collect water from the channel, commencing when he purchased the property in 1543. He didn’t get sufficient water from the cistern that he had established on his property to obtain rainwater. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat below his residence, and he had a shaft opened to give him access.
